WayForward Technologies has completed the first gameplay trailer for Adventure Time: Hey Ice King! Why'd You Steal Our Garbage?!. The game, based on a Cartoon Network animated series, is definitely drawing inspiration from the 8-bit era.
Adventure Time stars Finn, a young man with a heroic streak. His constant companion is Jake, a dog with a variety of special powers. Jake rides around on Finn's back and performs special moves to defeat enemies.
The gameplay seems modeled on Zelda II: The Adventure of Link. Players travel between key locations on a top-down overland map with wandering monsters. When the player enters an area with enemies, the game switches to a 2D side-scrolling style.
There's no shortage of Zelda clones out there, to be sure. However, it does feel like Zelda 2 clones are much more rare. Its deviations from the first Zelda's gameplay led to some hatin'. Whether it was as good as the first game is debatable but it's still a good game nonetheless. It's a fine model for Adventure Time to use, in other words.
Adventure Time will debut on the 3DS on October 23rd.
