Looking for a new way to watch your favorite HBO shows like Game of Thrones, Game of Thrones or, perhaps, Game of Thrones? Well, good news for PlayStation 4 owners, as Sony has today announced that the HBO Go app is finally arriving on the home console starting today.
Just in time for the season five premiere of Game of Thrones, the HBO Go app is finally making its way to the PlayStation 4 once the regular weekly update goes live this afternoon. SCEA Senior VP of Business Development Rhil Rosenberg made the announcement official earlier today over on the PlayStation Blog, saying that the inclusion of the app has been a long time coming.
“The app functions just like the PS3 version,” Rosenberg explained. “After you authenticate your PS4 with your current cable/satellite service through HBOGO.com/activate, you’ll be able to watch every episode of every season of HBO’s best shows…”
Alongside the obvious Game of Thrones, this lineup includes shows like the beloved True Detective, nerdy comedy Silicon Valley and lots of movies, to boot. Classics are also included, such as Band of Brothers, Adams, Oz and The Sopranos. But, let’s face it…
Rosenberg throws in a handy reminder that season five of Game of Thrones goes live April 12, so that gives you about a month to catch up on the previous four series before diving into the new content. If you gorge on the show like most people, though, catching up should actually take you less than a week.
As a friendly reminder, HBO mentioned last year that they would possibly separate the app from cable/satellite providers sometime in 2015 so, for those of you who have done away with such services, you may be able to enjoy all of that HBO goodness in the coming months without having to sign up for 157 OTHER channels. My guess: Expect it sometime after season five of GoT wraps up.
Now a little over a year into its life cycle, it’s nice to see the PS4’s library of media options growing, as HBO Go will today join the likes of similar Netflix, Hulu and Crunchyroll apps, just to name a few. So if you’re not too busy shooting your friends in the face or fighting off zombies in a crumbling city, now you can curl up on the couch and take part in more leisurely activities, like watching a woman give birth do a shadow demon or a dude smash another dude’s skull with his bare hands.
Now, about that PlayStation Vue app we’ve been hearing so much about…?
