The last day of 2012 also brings with it the last PlayStation Plus update of the year. Subscribers will be able to ring in the New Year with free copies of NBA Jam On Fire Edition for the PlayStation 3, Chronovolt for the PlayStation Vita and deeper discounts on the final batch of PSN Holiday Essentials sales.

The biggest perk of the PlayStation Plus service is always the downloadable games and, this week, two titles will be joining the Instant Game Collection. First up is NBA Jam On Fire Edition. Some of you youngsters in the audience never got to play the original NBA Jam back when it dominated the arcades and 16-bit era, giving players the chance to play two-on-two hoops with some of the biggest names in the league, as well as some bizarre cameo characters. The On Fire Edition is a relaunch of sorts, building a new game from the ground up that offers new modes and abilities while still maintaining the series’ over-the-top arcade sporting action and charm.

Next up is Chronovolt, a brand new Vita title that tasks players with rolling a ball through a treacherous maze of high platforms and tricky obstacles. But why read about what you can watch, amiright?

Along with the above games, Plus subscribers will this week have access to even lower prices on this week’s Holiday Essentials sale titles, ranging from Batman: Arkham City for $14.70 to Sound Shapes for $7.35. For the full list of games on sale, visit the PlayStation Blog.

Finally, thanks to tomorrow’s holiday, the PlayStation Network weekly update will be going live this afternoon. So that means you can look for these Plus downloads and deals starting later today.
