To say that Tomorrowland is a priority for Disney’s hit making machine is like saying oxygen is a priority for the human body. With a month to go until the film’s release, the studio is ready to sell the hell out of Brad Bird’s vision of a future that only Walt Disney and his contemporaries could have dreamed of. And sell the hell out of it they have in this third trailer for the hopeful summer blockbuster, as you’ll see below in the video.
Disney Movie Trailers shared that awesome look at the more action-packed elements of Tomorrowland, and it’s about time, too. With The Avengers: Age Of Ultron set to debut in international markets at the end of the week, audiences are going to want high-quality action to help enrich the high that they’ll undoubtedly feel after watching Marvel’s mightiest heroes battle Ultron and his minions. Which would have sucked for Tomorrowland’s previous marketing strategy of selling the film as a big mystery picture with whimsy and wonder, with action mixed in for good measure.
With this new strategy also comes a new announcement from Disney, which really drives home the levels to which they’re trying to market a film that is so entrenched in the company’s history. The exciting trailer throws in an awesome sequence where George Clooney and Britt Robinson evade capture by using high tech gadgetry from a Resident Evil movie, as well as a mini Stargate. Even more exciting, though, is the news that Disney released via a press release this morning, detailing a special first look experience in IMAX. Thankfully, you won’t have to purchase any new tickets if you want to see this first look at Tomorrowland, as the studio has announced the following:
Additionally, a special presentation of the film Tomorrowland, featuring more than six minutes of footage to be introduced by director Brad Bird, will screen exclusively in IMAX theatres domestically and in select international markets beginning May 1. The extended first look of Tomorrowland will screen directly prior to Marvel’s Avengers: Age of Ultron and will play for the duration of that film’s run in IMAX
If the third trailer to Tomorrowland is any indication as to what we’ll be seeing in that extended six minute look, it’s a safe bet to assume that we’ll be seeing one of two things. Option one would be that we’re going to see Britt Robertson’s Casey exploring Tomorrowland for the first time, as she runs through the sights and sounds of the future and drinks it all in. Option two is that we just might see the entirety of that action scene featured in the trailer, where George Clooney’s Frank protects and rescues Casey from an army of robotic henchmen. Whichever option Disney chooses, the ending of that six minute sizzle reel will probably ramp up the action beats essential to selling The Avengers: Age Of Ultron audience on a film that, if not carefully marketed, could miss its mark (and cost Disney a small fortune).
Tomorrowland hits conventional and IMAX theaters on May 22nd, while the prequel novel, Before Tomorrowland, is on book shelves now. If you’re digging the retro sci-fi tones of Brad Bird’s labor of love, you’re going to want to pick up a copy for yourself. Also, The Avengers: Age Of Ultron opens Friday internationally, with us domestic folk waiting until May 1st. If you don’t have your IMAX tickets in hand already, you may want to get on that.
