Brad Pitt and Angelina Jolie finally tied the knot last month – and apparently the duo decided the best way to celebrate was by collaborating on a moody, romantic drama titled By the Sea. We’re sharing the first pics, and the early plot details, from the new production.
The film, which is Pitt and Jolie’s first work together since 2005’s Mr. and Mrs. Smith (the film where they became a real-life couple), is a period piece set in the 1970s according to a newly published piece over at EW. By the Sea takes place in France, where Jolie and Pitt play a married couple who are drifting apart. However, things begin to change and passions rekindle when they stop in a small French village and interact with the local inhabitants.
Jolie will not only headline the film, but also handle the writing and directing duties for By the Sea. This will mark the actress’ third time behind the camera, having helmed The Land of Blood and Honey back in 2011, and the World War II feature Unbroken, which will hit theaters this Christmas.
A statement released by the actress reveals the rationale for her decision to set the film in a different time period:
"I chose to set By the Sea in the 1970s, not only because it is a colorful and alluring era, but because it removes many of the distractions of contemporary life and allows the focus to remain squarely on the emotions that the characters experience in their journey."
Presumably, this is a subtle dig at our always-on, connected-24-hours-a-day lifestyle, which doesn’t often allow for quiet reflection. By choosing to set By the Sea in an age where cell phones and the Internet aren’t constantly vying for our attention, Jolie can presumably craft a film that really delves into the characters and their relationships.
Universal Studios will release By the Sea, but the studio has yet to schedule a date for when it will hit theaters. Studio boss Donna Langley wanted the project as soon as she read script, citing its ability to be a period piece, yet also having it be timeless in terms of the themes it explores. The first three photos from the film definitely convey some of that vibe. Here’s to hoping the rest of the film lives up to Jolie’s lofty ambitions.
By the Sea is currently filming in Malta, with the goal of finishing principal photography sometime in the middle of November.
