Disney Goes Back To The Enchanted Well

I think you can never have too many movies inspired by Goethe, the 18th century German writer. In the same vein, Disney feels that you can never mine the same source material too many times. Toss in Nicolas Cage and you are gold, Jerry, gold.

Variety is reporting that Nicolas Gage and Todd Garner are going to produce a live-action The Sorcerer's Apprentice for Disney. The script has been written by Lawrence Konner and Mark Rosenthal. They have written many films, unfortunately, it doesn't appear that any of them (Superman IV, Flicka, Mighty Joe Young, The Beverly Hillbillies, Planet of the Apes) are good. Todd Garner is also associated with a lot of stinkers (The Animal, Man of the House, xXx, Are We There Yet, Little Man), so I guess Cage is our only hope that this won't suck.

Anyone who has seen 1940's Fantasia or read a lot of Goethe (probably a smaller group) will remember that The Sorcerer's Apprentice story follows an untrained apprentice who is left alone by a sorcerer in his workshop. The apprentice tries to get an enchanted broomstick to do his work but can't control the magic and nearly destroys society as we know it, or something. The segment lasted about 10 minutes in Fantasia which leaves a little room for padding in this live action version. It doesn't sound like a great movie, but then again, neither did a movie based on a theme park ride, and Pirates of the Caribbean turned out pretty well.
