When you watch the Franklyn trailer, you might be wondering, just who is doing that overwrought voice over? Well, I’ll kill the suspense for you right off the bat, it is Ryan Phillippe, sounding cheesier than ever. It could just be the trailer but this movie looks like a hybrid knockoff of V for Vendetta, Dark City, and Watchmen. I know you can’t technically knock off a film until it has been legally unbound and seen by all, but after hearing the last line of the preview, “I’ll be waiting, and watching,” you might think differently. Plus, as you will notice in the picture to your right, the mask says it all: Phillippe looks just like Rorschach.
I honestly can not tell you what the plot of this movie is. There is a man who wants to kill someone who wears a disgusting looking mask. There is a woman who is supposed to be sixteen, but really looks more like thirty who is waiting to be saved. There is a young man whose father is looking for him. And then there is some parallel dimension in which the “storyteller” is holding Eva Green captive. I don’t know how these elements are supposed to combine, but that is all I’ve got. This movie looks a little to stylized for me, but you might be into it.
