Golden Globes Build A Tower Out Of Babel

The Hollywood Foreign Press has announced their 64th annual batch of Golden Globe nominees. Unlike the Oscars, the Globes break things down into more specific categories. They don’t just have a Best Picture category, they have Best Drama and Best Comedy Or Musical, an admission that comedies can’t win awards when up against stuffy drama. They also award television along with film, making the ceremony a convergence of all sorts of artists.

There are a few surprises in there. For instance Bobby got a Best Drama nomination, when it hasn’t gotten much attention from previous awards givers. Leonardo DiCaprio was nominated twice in the same category. He’s up against himself in Best Actor – Drama for both Blood Diamond and The Departed. The Departed I can see, but saying “bling bang” ought to be enough to disqualify him for any award involving Blood Diamond.

For a change, it wasn’t The Queen which came up with the most movie nominations. Instead, Babel is the GG frontrunner. They earned seven nominations, including nods for Best Motion Picture – Drama, and Best Supporting Actor Brad Pitt.

Below is the full list of nominees for the 64th Annual Golden Globe Awards. They’ll be presented on January 15, 2007.
