It has been a long and bumpy road for Natalie Portman’s upcoming western, Jane Got a Gun. The movie has been postponed and bumped and pushed back almost too many times to count. Still, it keeps on trucking right along, and is currently slated to be released early next year (yeah, we’ll believe that when we actually sit down and see it in a theater). A new international trailer has just been released, and despite all the problems and issues, we’re starting to ask ourselves if this movie is going to be good?

Granted, it’s just a trailer, but even with all of the turmoil behind the scenes during production and distribution, this actually looks like Jane Got a Gun could turn out to be a solid grim, gritty western.

Originally slated to be released in August 2014, it has been a hot potato situation as the original distributor, Relativity, became mired in a messy bankruptcy. The film was rescheduled half a dozen times before being dropped by the distributor, though The Weinstein Company ultimately picked it up and will release it in theaters.

In addition to distribution woes, there was an ugly lawsuit between the producers and original director Lynne Ramsey. When Ramsey bailed, the producers brought a civil legal action against the Scottish director, and though it was ultimately resolved, it was just one big hurdle for them to clear. Then there was casting, which saw Jude Law replaced by Bradley Cooper, who was replaced by Ewan McGregor.

Despite the troubles and background drama, however, there’s a ton of potential in Jane Got a Gun. After Ramsey left, Gavin O’Conner, who helmed the criminally underrated Warrior, took over the reins, and the cast is full of big name talent. In addition to Natalie Portman as the titular Jane, the core cast includes Joel Edgerton, Ewan McGregor, Noah Emmerich, and Boyd Holbrook, among others. That sounds like a movie people might want to see.

The story revolves around Jane Hammond, who, after being tormented by a gang of outlaws called the Bishop Boys, has built a new life with her husband Bill Hammond (Emmerich). Unfortunately for her, she once again finds herself at odds with the Bishop’s and their leader, Colin (McGregor), after Bill gets in a duel with them. He’s in a bad way, shot to hell, and with the gang descending on them, Jane must turn to the last person she wants to see, her ex-fiancé Dan Frost (Edgerton), for help. This, of course, stirs up all sorts of memories and feelings as they battle just to survive.

Told you it sounds promising, but we’ll have to wait until next year as Jane Got a Gun doesn’t hit theaters until February 2016.
