John Rambo Gets A Release Date

Lionsgate has set a date for Sly Stallone’s resurrection of Rambo. John Rambo will now be released on January 25th, setting it up to compete against such movies as Michel Gondry’s Be King Rewind and the by now annoyingly obtuse and as of yet untitled JJ Abrams mystery project, also known as 01-18-08 and Cloverfield.

With seven days between the release of Cloverfield and John Rambo, both movies have plenty of time to make their money. Besides, it’s January. Who goes to the movies in January, unless it’s to catch up on Oscar nominees? It’s not exactly the place studios plop down their summer blockbusters, which tells you something about Lionsgate’s modest expectations for their probably too late Rambo sequel.

In John Rambo, Rambo is recruited to guide a group of Christian aid workers up the Salween River to deliver medical. When the missionaries fail to return, Rambo is persuaded to take a group of mercenaries back into the war-torn border region to find them.
