Leaked Zoolander 2 Trailer Is Dumb On Purpose, Ridiculously Funny

Update: Paramount Pictures just released the official teaser trailer which we replaced below.

At first it looks like it might be a trailer for a Stephen Hawking documentary. Maybe a film version of A Brief History of Time? The mechanical voice takes us through the history of the universe, but then you notice something’s just not right. It’s not a movie about obtaining scientific knowledge. It’s about stupid people. Check out the trailer for Zoolander 2:

It’s really just a teaser, as the trailer contains no footage of the film itself but for fans of the original, the movie’s trademark dumb can be found in abundance. There’s the brilliant math, (1+4=14, wait, is that not right?), the terrible language (make sure to check out the definition of "Eugoogly" which is a word I will now begin to use) and the existential questions, at least what really stupid people consider existential. It may not tell us much about the movie’s plot, but it tells us plenty about the movie’s comedy, which is right where it would be expected to be.

The trailer is not official which explains it’s somewhat poor visual quality though the good news is that since there isn’t really a lot to see the lack of resolution doesn’t hurt the viewing. The trailer had originally popped up on YouTube for just a second before vanishing. Luckily, a second is all it takes for something to exist online forever. We would expect the full trailer to hit any moment, as that’s usually what the studios do. And usually it’s no big deal unless you’re Warner Brothers.

It’s hard to believe it’s been nearly 15 years since the original Zoolander was released. It was a huge hit with audiences and even warmed up many critics, something which is tough for "dumb comedies" to pull off much of the time. All of the usual suspects will be returning for the sequel including, Ben Stiller, Owen Wilson, and Will Ferrell. In addition, Penelope Cruz is on board in an as yet unspecified role. The movie will apparently be full of other celebrities as well including, of all people, Justin Bieber.

The movie is expected to deal with the two lead characters, Stiller's Derek Zoolander and Wilson's Hansel, 10 years after the events of the first film. After 10 years the two guys who made their living on their looks aren't necessarily looking as great as they used to, so what do they do when they've lost their one marketable skill?

It’s almost certainly the dumbest trailer you’ll see all year, at least until the next one is released. Zoolander 2 (or Two-lander as I will now refer to it) will hit theaters in February of 2016.
