Love him or hate him, Marlon Wayans has been arguably one of the biggest names in spoof movies of the last 15 years. As such, it should be no surprise that he is planning to once again return to the genre - only instead of horror movies, this time around he plans on poking fun at Fifty Shades of Grey.
The Hollywood Reporter says that Wayans is teaming up with producer-writer Rick Alvarez to make a new movie called Fifty Shades of Black that will directly spoof the hit romantic drama from earlier this year. At this point in time, very little is known about the project, but it has been confirmed that Wayans plans to star in the film as himself - presumably playing the Christian Grey-type role that was played by Jamie Dornan in the original movie.
This is far from Marlon Wayans' first go-round with Rick Alvarez, as the two men have actually been working together ever since 2001's Scary Movie 2. That being said, some may see their collaboration as a not-so-great thing when you look at their shared resume. After all, it includes not only titles like A Haunted House and A Haunted House 2 - their most recent contributions to the spoof genre - but also both White Chicks and Little Man. Seriously, do you remember Little Man?
Of course, it's not hard to see why Wayans and Alvrez might target Fifty Shades of Grey. After all, the source materials abundance of sexual material should be rather easy to translate into low-brow humor (for example, you'll see in THR's report that the spoofed teaser poster has Marlon Wayans posing like this teaser poster, only with his pants around his ankles. Talking about his approach to the project, Wayans said in an official statement,
Sex and comedy go hand-in-hand and I'm looking forward to having fun with this project. It’s amazing when a film of this caliber comes along begging to be made fun of. I’m really happy to be doing what I love with people I love to do it with. That double entendre was intentional.
Fifty Shades of Black will be sold to buyers at the Cannes Film Festival next week, and while IM Global is set to fully finance the film, there don't appear to be any details available about a possible start of production or suggested release date. Stay tuned for more information about this project as it becomes available.
