The Star Wars universe is home to a wide variety of droids that can convey an even wider range of emotions. If any proof was needed, the following Instagram video of BB-8 – the droid who will make its debut in Star Wars: The Force Awakens should be all you need.
Cleverly capitalizing on the reactions of both Daisy Ridley and John Boyega, the official Instagram account for Star Wars dropped this video of the roly-poly droid freaking out about the trailer that broke the internet, and caused fans to go into a frenzy to buy tickets to the opening weekend premiere. The video specifically parodies Ridley's reaction video, as BB-8 is curled up in a blanket & relaxing in a similar fashion to that of its human counterpart.
So what exactly is BB-8 freaking out about? Well if you listen very closely to the audio in the reaction video, you'll hear that the Star Wars: The Force Awakens trailer is cued up to about the 01:14 mark, where Han Solo appears for the first time, leading to the beautiful new hyperspace footage. Seeing as BB-8, much like R2-D2, looks to be a navigational companion droid, one could imagine that the Millennium Falcon kicking into light speed is not only an exciting sight for our new mechanized friend, but also a familiar one. Let's just hope nobody shows him the Jar Jar "enhanced" version that someone cooked up not too long ago. The poor little thing might short circuit.
The public reaction to the trailer, as well as the reactions of the cast, have been an extremely popular subject over the past week, and it's hard to realize that tomorrow is actually a week since it premiered in front of all of our eyes during Monday Night Football. So naturally, this officially sanctioned parody video is a fitting response to all of the hype surrounding our last, best look at probably the biggest blockbuster of the year. Seeing as how flat this weekend's box office results turned out, it's nice to know that people are still excited about the movies – even if it's a film that's not slated to come out for another two months.
Though there's one more interesting angle to BB-8's reaction to the Star Wars: The Force Awakens, and that's the hardware involved. More specifically, the BB-8 droid on display in the clip is Sphero's BB-8 App-Enabled Droid, which retails for about $150. Why is this important? Because much like tickets to opening weekend, the BB-8 droid is selling out like hot cakes through various retailers that are offering it. If Star Wars: The Force Awakens is the hottest film of the fall, than BB-8 is going to be the most valuable toy on the shelves. If you're looking for one to put into the hands of that special someone, you better act quickly.
Star Wars: The Force Awakens will probably cause us all to freak out, like a little droid huddled in its blankets, on December 18th.
