Since the first images of Only God Forgives surfaced more than a year ago, Ryan Gosling's mug has been pretty much the only one associated with Nicolas Winding Refn's follow-up to the pair's critical darling of a collaboration, Drive. Fitting then that this is the poster touted on this drama's IMDB page, flaunting not only The Gos but also its coveted premiere at the Cannes Film Festival last month. But what a difference a few festival days make.
To the shock of those of us forced to follow the French fest vicariously, the reviews out of Cannes were positively scathing with critics calling it "ultra-violent," "a drudging affair," and declaring it was the director's fame alone that allowed its entrance to the prestigious celebration of cinema. And they weren't alone in their disgust, as booing from the audience as well as walkouts of the film's screenings were reported. But for many reviewers, one bright spot was Kristin Scott Thomas in the role of Gosling's vile mother. (For a taste of her performance, check out this wildly NSFW clip.) So now it seems the marketing is shifting focus to a new asset, namely Thomas's baaaaaaaaad mother. Check out her colorful and captivating character poster below, courtesy of Moviefone.
Only God Forgives stars Gosling as a drug smuggler making bank in Bangkok. But his sweet life of crime gets a new kink when his mother (Thomas) demands he get vengeance for the recent death of his brother. Yayaying Rhatha Phongam, Tom Burke, Vithaya Pansringarm, and Rhatha Phongam co-star. Refn writes and directs.
Despite all the bad press, I'm still eager to see what Only God Forgives has going for it. How about you?
Even with the bad reports out of Cannes, will you see Only God Forgives?
