No Sequel For Zombie's Halloween

Rob Zombie’s Halloween remake scored the biggest Labor Day Weekend opening ever last weekend and he’s just signed a two-picture deal with Dimension Films. Normally that’d mean instant sequel, but for once we may be spared from another lame-duck franchise. Rob Zombie’s just too cool for that.

Rob recently spoke to Entertainment Weekly, and told them he has higher aspirations. He says, “I'm not going to do any more Halloween movies, or any more remakes of any kind. I signed up for two more pictures, but not two more Halloween pictures.” I’d always thought it was strange that he did a remake in the first place. His first two movies, love them or hate them, were incredibly original. At least now he’s admitting Halloween was a remake, and not a re-imagining or a prequel or whatever mumbo jumbo he and Dimension were once using to try and sell it.

Now that he’s gotten a big paycheck for doing a franchise film, it sounds like Zombie has rediscovered his principles. Talking about his next two movies he says, “They're going to be original stuff — and I don't necessarily know that they're going to be related to the horror genre either.” To me that’s the real shocker. Zombie has seemed pretty devoted to the horror genre so far. I’d never have guessed he had any ambition to do anything else. The guy seemed pretty content to grow old becoming the next Wes Craven. Could a Rob Zombie rom-com be looming on the horizon?
