Sundance Doc Turned Into Mainstream Comedy

It's one thing for your indie documentary to become a hit at the Sundance Film Festival and be seen by millions of audiences worldwide. But it's a whole different, and weirder, kind of success when no one outside the festival sees your movie until it's turned into a feature film by the guy who made Meet the Parents.

Jay Roach, also responsible for Austin Powers, will bestow this fate upon Chris Waitt, who made the autobiographical documentary The Complete History of My Sexual Failures. Variety reports that the feature version will be about a man who interviews every girl he's ever been with to answer the immortal question, "What's wrong with me?" Roach may or may not direct it, but he'll produce it along with Neil Moritz. Jay Reiss is writing the screenplay.

It reminds me a little of the plans to make a feature version of Sherman's March, Ross McElwee's documentary that similarly mined his past romances for content. It's not a bad idea, especially when the original material is good, but it sure must be weird for the documentary filmmaker involved. Presumably this will get at least a few more people to see Waitt's movie, which is great news for him. If the guy they get to play him is attractive, then the guy is in clover.
