Who were the biggest stars of 2012? Well, a lot of that depends on what your definition of “biggest” would be.

Few people could argue that they had a bigger year than Jennifer Lawrence, who had one smash hit in The Hunger Games and is closing off the year with Oscar buzz for her performance in David O. Russell’s Silver Linings Playbook. At the same time, Kristen Stewart closed off her massive Twilight franchise with Breaking Dawn: Part 2, had a summer hit with Snow White and the Huntsman, generated a few critical raves for On the Road and even notched her own tabloid scandal thanks to an ill-timed kiss with her Huntsman director.

Both ladies make a new list released by IMDB, which tallied its STARmeter rankings for the year to simply see which celebrities marked the most page views. Critical assessments and box-office numbers weren’t important. This was just cyber-interest generated by IMDB users, and their No. 1 selection – Tom Hardy – was somewhat surprising to me.

Hardy has steadily ascended up the ranks thanks to films like Inception and Warrior. And yes, he played Bane in Chris Nolan’s The Dark Knight Rises. But his other two films from 2012 -- Lawless and This Means War -- were largely overlooked, so I’m a little shocked to see him leading the chart. Then again, he’s joined by the rest of his TDKR cast (though not Anne Hathaway, which also is a bit of a surprise), so I guess the power of Batman was enough to power the IMDB page views.

Here's the full list...

1. Tom Hardy

2. Jennifer Lawrence

3. Chris Hemsworth

4. Joseph Gordon-Levitt

5. Christian Bale

6. Channing Tatum

7. Johnny Depp

8. Emma Stone
