Universal Lives In Van Down By The River

Believer writer Henry Bean has sold his adaptation of the Charles Bowden story “Down By The River” to Universal. The tale of carjacking and Mexican corruption sounds like an edge-of-your-seat drama, and I cannot wait until this slithers its way through the production process.

According to Variety, the movie will focus on a 1995 slaying that was originally thought to be just another carjacking gone wrong. Upon further review, it ends up being linked to the victim’s brother who worked for the Drug Enforcement Administration. This naturally causes a big brouhaha, and the stink trail of lies and deceit leads all the way up to the highest reaches of Mexico’s government.

The diabolical foursome of Scott Stuber, Mary Parent, Peter Landesman, and Naomi Despres will serve as producers. Look for this to find its way into your local multiplex late next year or in early 2009.
