New Power Rangers Image Shows Rita Repulsa In A Strange Setting

The Rita Repulsa moviegoers are getting next year in the Power Rangers reboot will be a lot different than the one who antagonized the multi-colored heroes in the '90s. The most drastic change to Elizabeth Banks' version is her costume change, but we've also seen that she's more willing to get her hands dirty and target the Rangers directly. That said, there's still a lot of mystery surrounding what the villainess will be up to in this retelling, and a new image placing her in a strange setting just added another question to the list.

The Power Rangers social media accounts posted this picture today (taken by photographer Tim Palen) of Rita Repulsa behind a wall made of glass or some kind of crystal. There's no information provided in the post, so we can't say for sure what's going on in this scene, but we do have a few guesses. One, this could be her new prison. In the Mighty Morphin' Power Rangers TV series, Rita and her lackeys were kept inside a space dumpster (seriously) for 10,000 years, but in the movie, perhaps Rita will awaken from a stasis cell that looks more alien. Another possibility is that she's looking through the structure that houses Zordon, the Power Rangers' mentor. Whatever that wall is meant to be, judging by the cracks, it doesn't look like it will be standing for much longer.

Like the original Rita Repulsa, Elizabeth Banks' version will awaken after millennia of imprisonment in Power Rangers and immediately set out to conquer Earth with her lackeys. To properly combat her, Zordon will recruit a team of teenagers with attitude and give them special powers, including mighty weapons and controlling giant mechanical beasts known as Zords. It also looks like there may be a closer connection between this version of Ria and Green Ranger. Aside from her costumes color scheme, set photos have also shown her wielding a staff that has what looks like a green Power Coin attached to the top. That could mean that Rita's power could become the source of the Green Rangers abilities in the Power Rangers sequel, but we still have a ways to go until we learn what Rita's ultimate fate will be in this universe.

Aside from Elizabeth Banks, the main Power Rangers cast includes Dacre Montgomery as the Red Ranger, Becky G as the Yellow Ranger, Ludi Lin as the Black Ranger, Naomi Scott as the Pink Ranger, RJ Cyler as the Blue Ranger and Bryan Cranston as Zordon. You can see these new heroes morph into action when the movie is released on March 24, 2017.
