The Best Picture screw up at this year's Academy Awards is still a topic of conversation a month later. However, today we're talking not about the screw-up, but about the way that Ryan Gosling reacted to it. Gosling took the stage along with the rest of the folks from La La Land when it was announced as the winner, but when it was discovered that Moonlight was the actual winner, most people were shocked. Gosling, instead, started laughing on stage. Now, the actor has explained what was going through his mind. His giggles came from the relief that the only thing that had happened was the Academy got the award wrong. He explained...
What really was happening as I was watching, it was surreal anyway, I was watching people start to have this panicked reaction in the crowd and guys were coming on with headsets and I felt like someone had been hurt, I thought there was some kind of medical situation, and I had this worst-case scenario playing out in my head. And then I just heard Moonlight won and I was so relieved that I started laughing.
It's not too surprising. Ryan Gosling was at the center of the action. When La La Land was announced as the winner, the folks involved in that movie celebrated, but at the same time, people from backstage sprung into action. For the Oscars, it likely qualified as a worst case scenario, so the production crew was taking it very seriously, but until Gosling knew what was going on his imagination was running wild with all sorts of potential catastrophes. He told the Adobe Summit (via People) that once the reality sunk in, the relief resulted in laughter.
Ryan Gosling went on to say that he was ultimately happy to see Moonlight take home the Best Picture prize. He knows director Barry Jenkins and thought the film was "groundbreaking" in what it was able to do for such a minimal budget. It's possible then that some of the laughter also came from joy that such a great film ended up winning. This is the look of a guy who's just happy nobody died.
Sometimes when things go completely haywire the only ways to respond are to panic or simply laugh at the ridiculous situation. Ryan Gosling appears to be well adjusted enough to know that freaking out simply isn't going to accomplish anything. Laughing is the much healthier response.
