After the first Fantastic Beasts and Where To Find Them movie ended we knew that future films were going to be dealing with more of the history of the Wizarding World referenced in the Harry Potter movies. Now, we've learned that a young Albus Dumbledore will officially appear in the sequel. The reason we know is that an actor has been cast, and he's perfect. It's being reported that Jude Law will appear as the young Dumbledore in the next Fantastic Beasts movie.
The news was just reported by Pottermore that Jude Law has been cast so at this point details are scarce. We had a feeling we'd be seeing Dumbledore eventually as his history with Gellert Grindelwald, the villain revealed to be Johnny Depp in the last movie, was well known. We knew that Dumbledore would show up at least briefly in the next film so the casting was only a matter of time.
Dumbledore is briefly name dropped in Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them when Colin Farrell's character asks Newt Scamander (Eddie Redmayne) why the Hogwart's professor likes him so much. At the time it seems like just a snide comment from a guy who doesn't like Newt very much. Of course, at the end of the film, we discover that Farrell's character is actually the wizard Grindlewald in disguise. We know that in the history of the Harry Potter universe these two characters are destined to have an epic encounter, and as such, the question takes on a new meaning.
Jude Law feels like absolutely perfect casting. If nothing else he's a pretty major name to go up alongside Johnny Depp. Law is a two-time Academy Award nominee, known for among many other things, his roles in the Sherlock Holmes series with Robert Downey Jr. He'll next be seen in Guy Ritchie's Arthurian story King Arthur: Legend of the Sword.
Albus Dumbledore was first played by Richard Harris in the first two Harry Potter films before the role was taken over by Michael Gambon following Harris' death. We're not sure that an elderly Jude Law will ever look like either of these actors, though to be fair we've never seen Jude Law with a beard this epic.
Previously, J.K. Rowling, who has already written the screenplay for the next film, had said that she had somebody specific in mind to play the young Dumbledore, but she wasn't going to divulge who it was for fear of upsetting whoever eventually was cast. We'll be waiting for confirmation from her on this one.
