Amazing Spider-Man

There are so many Spider-Man movies that have been made over the last several years that the newest entry doesn't even need to compete with the rest of the superhero genre at the box office. It can just compete with the other spideys. Spider-Man: Homecoming is the sixth film and the third separate franchise to hit the big screen in the last decade and a half. One might be afraid that moviegoers are suffering from Spider-Man fatigue, and yet that doesn't appear to be the case, as fans clearly like the new Spider-Man better than the last one. Homecoming has successfully overtaken both films in the Amazing Spider-Man series at the domestic box office.

Spider-Man: Homecoming had a solid opening, nearly clearing $120 million at the North American box office on its opening weekend. Since then it's been steadily adding to that total. It passed The Amazing Spider-Man 2 at the box office on July 16, but that film barely broke the $200 million mark and it's lower than expected performance was the reason we ended up with the reboot in the first place. A couple of days ago, Homecoming also made it past the first Amazing Spider-Man movie by reaching the $262 million mark.

Now Spider-Man: Homecoming finds itself moving well ahead of one Spider-Man franchise, with another standing in front of it. The original trilogy of Spider-Man movies with Tobey Maguire all did remarkably well at the box office and Tom Holland and company are going to have to put up some serious numbers in order to put a dent in that series. Even the much derided Spider-Man 3 did $336 million at the box office, which is a lot of additional business for Homecoming to do. The summer movie season is basically coming to an end so there isn't a lot more specific competition to deal with. At the same time, odds are that most people who want to see Homecoming on the big screen have done so. Maybe the Spider-Man 3 number is beatable. The $400 million that the original Spider-Man did is right out.

Overall Sony has to be glad that they made the deal they did with Marvel. Clearly Spider-Man: Homecoming is doing better than a third Amazing Spider-Man was likely to do. While not everything about the Amazing movies was bad, they clearly had problems, while most are in agreement that the new Spider-Man gets a lot of the things right that the previous movies got wrong. It seems that audiences are agreeing with that sentiment based on where they're choosing to spend their money. We'll get to see more of Marvel's new Spider-Man when he appears in Avengers: Infinity War next summer.
