Theodore "Ted" Logan isn't the only character Keanu Reeves is reprising in the near future. In recent years, Reeves has been breathing life into skilled assassin John Wick, with both 2014's John Wick and 2017's John Wick: Chapter 2 proving to be critical and commercial successes. Now John Wick 3 has officially begun production, and our first look at Reeves in the threequel shows the eponymous protagonist in a ominous area of New York City.
Yeah, I'm thinking he's back. This behind-the-scenes look at John Wick 3 comes to us courtesy of cinematographer Dan Lausten, who was the director of photography on John Wick: Chapter 2. It's hard to tell exactly what's happening in these scene that's being shot on the second day of principal photography, but it certainly doesn't look like John's in an area where he'll enjoy a nice sit-down dinner. I imagine that John's in this corner of the Big Apple to either meet with someone who hasn't completely turned their back on him or to deal with some fellow killers who are after the bounty on his head. Either way, this is a beautifully set up shot.
When we last left off with John Wick, he'd been declared excommunicado after he killed Santino D'Antonio on Continental grounds, which is a big no no in the assassin community. As if being stripped of his resources and privileges wasn't bad enough, the bounty on John's head called in by Santino was also doubled and offered globally by the High Table. Fortunately, Winston, the head of the Continental's New York location and someone who's more fond of John than most, gave him a one-hour head start before making his excommunication public, as well as a Marker for future use. Unfortunately, now John is on the run and must rely on his natural skills and whatever he can scrounge up to eliminate anyone who tries to snuff him out.
No specific John Wick 3 plot details have been revealed yet, but in addition to Keanu Reeves, the threequel will see Ian McShane, Laurence Fishburne, Ruby Rose, Common and Lance Reddick reprising their respective roles. As for new characters, The Wolverine star Hiroyuki Sanada has reportedly been cast as John Wick 3's main antagonist, the head of a Japanese crime syndicate. It was also recently reported that Halle Berry is being eyed to play the female lead, a character identified as "Sofia" who as a small child. Chad Stahelski and Derek Kolstad returned to direct John Wick 3 and write the movie's screenplay, respectively.
