DC's Birds Of Prey Movie Rumored To Be Adding Black Canary, More
Things are starting to gradually come together over in Gotham City, with Cathy Yan's Birds of Prey movie providing new insights in recent days. Hopefully, over the next few weeks we'll hear even more news, but for now, we've already heard reports that the film could be used as a springboard to introduce Batgirl into the DCEU before her solo movie, and now it looks like the film may also include Black Canary and Huntress, as well.
This seems like great news for DC fans with an affinity for black leather and fishnet stockings, because Omega Underground reports that the folks behind Birds of Prey may be looking to include Black Canary on the titular team. A fundamental member of the Birds of Prey squad, Black Canary (real name Dinah Lance) is a skilled hand-to-hand combatant with the ability to emit powerful sonic screams known as Canary Cries. Black Canary received a boost in popularity following her debut on Arrow, but now this report seems to suggest that she could take on even more prominence by shifting to the silver screen, though there aren't casting announcements to confirm yet.
The report of Black Canary potentially joining the Birds of Prey ensemble isn't the only report worth getting excited about. In addition to the reveal of Black Canary's potential role in the film, Omega Underground also reports that DC may be eying Huntress to join the movie as well. If you're unfamiliar with the character, then you can check out her look, below.
A badass anti-heroine/vigilante with an affinity for using a crossbow, Helena Bertinelli is often portrayed as a reformed villain with a comparatively darker edge than Batgirl or Black Canary. Like Canary, there's no word on possible actresses who could play this role yet, but (also like Black Canary) it would mark the first-ever big screen version of the hero.
It's not necessarily surprising to learn that the Birds of Prey movie may want to include Batgirl, Black Canary, and Huntress as its main lineup of heroes. The Birds of Prey team roster has fluctuated and evolved over the years, but those three have often stood out as the three most well-known and recognizable members of the ensemble. Not including them in the first Birds of Prey movie would be akin to not involving the DC Trinity in a Justice League movie; it's entirely possible, but the odds of it happening seem pretty low when we consider fan enthusiasm for those characters.
Those heroes aren't the only characters who have been rumored for Birds of Prey at this stage of the game. On the villainous side of things, there are also rumors that The Penguin may factor into the story as a bad guy, which would set Oswald Cobblepot a role in Matt Reeves' The Batman. However, none of this has been confirmed yet, so we will need to wait and see what comes of these rumors.
Make sure to stay tuned for more updates related to Cathy Yan's Birds of Prey as more details about the film are made available to us. The film doesn't have a set release date yet (though it may start filming in January), but you can watch out for James Wan's Aquaman when it splashes its way into theaters later this year on December 21.
