Say what you will about the artistic merit of the Fast and the Furious films or their liberal application of physics, but the popular franchise knows what it is and attracts real talent to join in on the fun. Kurt Russell, Charlize Theron and Helen Mirren are all among the names who have went for a ride with this series along with the regular cast of characters. Production is now underway for the first spinoff film in the Fast and Furious franchise, titled Hobbs and Shaw and it is adding some more talent to its already fun cast with Deadpool 2 actor Eddie Marsan.
The casting, first reported by Collider, reunites Eddie Marsan with his Deadpool 2 and Atomic Blonde director David Leitch, who is helming the Fast and Furious spinoff. Plot details for Hobbs and Shaw are currently under wraps, but brutal fights, fast cars and an explosion or two seem probable, and likewise this casting news does not give us any idea about whom Eddie Marsan is playing in the film. However, the casting news does note that Eddie Marsan's role is not a large one, but it is said to be significant. Eddie Marsan joins a cast that includes Dwayne Johnson, Jason Statham, Mission: Impossible Fallout's Vanessa Kirby and Idris Elba, who will be playing the villain in the film.
It's hard to speculate about what Eddie Marsan's role will be in Hobbs and Shaw given how little we know about the film. He is a talented actor who can play a good guy or a slimy villain, as we saw in Deadpool 2. We also don't really know what this movie will be yet. It's part of the Fast and Furious franchise, so there are certain action elements and hallmarks of that series that audiences will be expecting. And we're familiar with David Leitch's specialties, but Dwayne Johnson keeps teasing that the film will be fresh and new and an evolution of the franchise. So it will be interesting to see what that entails and how Eddie Marsan fits into it.
Those who want to see what Eddie Marsan brings to the table can check out his work on both the big and small screens the rest of this year. The character actor is currently appearing in White Boy Rick, and later this year he will show up in Adam McKay's Vice. We'll also see his Headmaster character again in the curious PG-13 re-release of Deadpool 2. He will also be appearing in the sixth season of Showtime's Ray Donovan, which premieres later this month.
Hobbs and Shaw races into theaters on August 2, 2019. Check out all the biggest movies heading to theaters in a stacked 2019 in our release schedule.
