The Fast And Furious Spinoff Has Added Shaw's Sister

Vanessa Kirby in The Crown

The Fast and Furious film series has slowly become a family affair for the Shaws. First, Owen Shaw gave Dominic Toretto and his crew trouble in 6. Then, Owen Shaw spent Furious 7 seeking revenge on the protagonists for putting Owen into a coma, which included him killing Han. Two years later in The Fate of the Furious, not only did both Shaw brothers become allies, but their mother, Magdalene, also got involved. Now with Jason Statham's Deckard Shaw embarking on a new adventure with Dwayne Johnson's Luke Hobbs in the appropriately-titled spinoff Hobbs and Shaw, it's being reported that Deckard and Owen's sister will appear, and it looks like The Crown's Vanessa Kirby will be the one to play her.

It had previously been rumored that Deckard Shaw's sister would appear in Hobbs and Shaw, but Variety reported today that with her time playing Princess Margaret on the Netflix series The Crown over, Vanessa Kirby is in final negotiations to play this character. The Shaw sister wasn't named, although the initial rumor identified her as Hattie Shaw. As for how she'll fit into Hobbs and Shaw, Kirby's character is said to be an MI-5 agent. Serving Queen and country runs in the Shaw family, although unlike her brothers, it appears that the sister hasn't turned to a life of crime... well, not yet anyway. Outside of The Crown, Kirby's notable credits include The Frankenstein Chronicles, Jupiter Ascending, Everest, Me Before You and the upcoming Mission: Impossible - Fallout.

No plot details for Hobbs and Shaw have been revealed yet, other than the fact that it will see Dwayne Johnson and Jason Statham's characters going on a special mission separate from the rest of the main Fast and Furious cast. However, Vanessa Kirby's character may not be the only way that this movie explores family. It has also been rumored that Hobbs and Shaw will introduce Luke Hobbs' mother and five brothers, with "Jonah" Hobbs playing a particularly important role. As for "Hattie" Shaw, I see her playing one of two parts in the spinoff. One, she'll be aide Luke and Owen in their mission, which has been sanctioned by the U.S. government. Two, somehow Luke and Owen will find themselves on the wrong side of the law, and the Shaw sister will have to track down her brother and his cohort, though that could also result in her eventually teaming up with the duo.

Directed by Deadpool 2's David Leitch and written by Chris Morgan, who's been part of the Fast and Furious franchise since 2006's Tokyo Drift, Hobbs and Shaw rolls into theaters on August 2, 2019, so stay tuned to CinemaBlend for continuing coverage about its development. In the meantime, feel free to look through our 2018 release schedule to learn what movies are coming out later this year.
