James Gunn Says The Suicide Squad Is The Most Fun Movie He’s Directed

Harley Quinn in Suicide Squad

James Gunn is a celebrated filmmaker, especially among comic book fans. He masterfully adapted the Guardians of the Galaxy into live-action, resulting in the motley crew of heroes becoming some of the most popular characters in the entire MCU. But following his (temporary) firing from the property, the filmmaker nabbed a gig directing The Suicide Squad for DC. That movie recently began filming, and it seems Gunn is having a really fun time bringing together the group of villains.

The Suicide Squad is one of the most hotly anticipated movies coming to the DC Extended Universe, mostly because of James Gunn's involvement. The movie will follow up on David Ayer's original movie, which failed to resonate with critics and audiences when it hit theaters in 2016. Gunn has assembled a mixture of new and returning actors for his version, and he recently expressed how much fun he was having bringing The Suicide Squad to life. Gunn was recently asked which of his movies was the most difficult, saying:

They're all challenging. Super was physically brutal - so much movie and so little time to shoot it. [Guardians of the Galaxy] Vol. 1 was scary because I didn't know if people would get the vibe. [Guardians of the Galaxy] Vol. 2 was the hardest because of my mental state. [The Suicide] Squad is the most complex and biggest but also the most fun so far. So I guess overall Vol. 2.

Well, this is exciting. James Gunn has worked on some iconic and hilarious movies during his career. So if he's having the most fun working on The Suicide Squad, then we should expect a wild ride for the upcoming blockbuster.

James Gunn's comments come from his recent (massive) Q&A on his personal Instagram page. And his comments should make DC fans every happy, especially following the disappointing performance of David Ayer's original film. The acclaimed director is having a great time bringing the motley crew of villains together. But the movie isn't simply fun and games, as Gunn also expressed that it was the most complex project he's worked on. As such, it seems like just about anything could happen once it hits theaters in 2021.

David Ayer's Suicide Squad had a lot going for it ahead of its release, which is part of what made the movie's quality such a disappointment. The first trailer was a raucous ride fueled by "Bohemian Rhapsody", but the final project left much to be desired. It seemed the franchise was DOA, but James Gunn will bring back Harley, Captain Boomerang, Amanda Waller, and more for his upcoming blockbuster. And while it'll be a long wait until it hits theaters, fans of the titular squad can read up on the comics, as Gunn is inspired by the group's adventures on the page.

James Gunn has already proven how adept he is with ensemble projects, so he seems like the perfect director to breathe new life into The Suicide Squad. If he can bring the same perspective, humor, and heart from Guardians of the Galaxy into the DC project, it might end up being one of the most beloved installments in the DCEU. He's certainly assembled a strong enough cast.

The Suicide Squad will hit theaters on August 6th, 2021. In the meantime, check out our 2019 release list to plan your next trip to the movies.
