Oh, snap! That’s the sound of the animated The Addams Family living to haunt another day. Just a few days after the creepy and kooky dark family comedy debuted in theaters, MGM has already revealed plans to make a sequel. A release date has been set for October 22, 2021. How hideously and horribly delightful for fans of the franchise.

Over the weekend, The Addams Family charmed audiences with a $35 million debut over four days. The family flick especially benefitted from Columbus Day on Monday, where it nabbed $4.8 million alone while around half of K-12 students were off for the day. It’s not record-breaking numbers by any means but enough of a success for the studio to continue the franchise with a second film.

Considering The Addams Family’s opening weekend competition, the animated spooky film held its own quite well. As Joker headed past $500 million in its second weekend for its buzzy release being praised by critics and fans alike, Addams Family beat out a Will Smith movie, directed by Oscar-winning director Ang Lee no less. Gemini Man made $10 million less than the animated movie during its first weekend, likely finding an audience in the iconic roots of the ‘60s sitcom and ‘90s films.

Addams Family has an incredibly talented cast to boast with Charlize Theron and Oscar Isaac starring as Morticia and Gomez Addams. Their children Wednesday and Pugsley are played by Chloe Grace Moretz and Stranger Things’ Finn Wolfhard. Big Mouth’s Nick Kroll embodies Uncle Fester, Snoop Dogg is It, Bette Midler is Grandma, Allison Janney plays home redesign TV host villain Margaux Needler and Eighth Grade’s Elsie Fisher as her daughter, Parker.

The animated movie marks the first time the Addams Family has been on the big screen in 26 years. The property was last revitalized in the early ‘90s by Barry Sonnenfeld (who also helmed the Men in Black trilogy). This 2019 version was directed by Greg Tiernan and Conrad Vernon, who collaborated on the raunchy R-rated animated comedy Sausage Party.

This version is the first time the family is adapted into animation and based on the source material of the New Yorker cartoons from the 1930s by Charles Addams. When MGM won the rights to the property, the estate was apparently really excited to turn the franchise into animation, per Deadline. Now that the first film has found an audience, it will build into a series of movies.

Addams Family found a decent response among filmgoers with a 70% audience score on Rotten Tomatoes and a B+ Cinemascore. Critics however didn’t overall enjoy the movie, giving it a Rotten 39% and CinemaBlend’s own Will Ashton awarding it 2.5 out of 5 stars in his review.

This weekend, Addams Family will come up against Maleficent: Mistress of Evil for a family audience.
