Subscribe To Weekend Box Office: New Movies Have Little To Be Thankful For Updates
Movies who topped the charts last weekend had a lot to be thankful this week. The newcomers... not so much.

As expected, following its high-riding opening, Breaking Dawn: Part 2 slipped almost 70% from last weekend but the final part of the final chapter still raked in $43 million, enough to hold on to number one.

Skyfall held on strong, dropping less than 15% and maintaining second place. Lincoln expanded to its widest release so far, over 2000 theaters. The film increased its take to $25 million this weekend, breathing some new life into its financial outlook and giving it just enough steam to outperform the newcomers this weekend.

The top new movie released this week, Rise of the Guardians, limped onto screens, taking in just $24 million over the weekend, adding to the $8 million it earned over Thanksgiving. That $32 million is a weak start for the holiday-themed animated entry which has a long way to go to recover its hefty $145 million budget.

Special-effects-heavy adaptation Life of Pi had an equally burdensome $120 million budget. Coming in fifth place it banked just $22 million this weekend and $30 total over the Thanksgiving break.

As disappointing as the weekend was for both those movies, the big loser was remake Red Dawn which received the cold shoulder from holiday audiences who handed over just $14 million for a weak seventh place. Some may be cheering the underwhelming performance of the film, hoping it sends a message to Hollywood: don't waste your time remaking movies that don't need it.

There's been a lot of critical buzz around Silver Linings Playbook and this weekend audiences showed just how much of the the buzz they're biting into. Widening to just over 350 venues the movie took in over $4 million for a solid $12,600 in per-theater sales, the highest in the top ten.
