Subscribe To Melissa McCarthy Comedies Top Redbox's 10 Most Rented Movies Of 2013 List Updates
If Redbox were a contest, Melissa McCarthy would be the winner of 2013. McCarthy is the common denominator among the top two movies on Redbox’s Top 10 movie rentals of 2013. Identity Thief and The Heat top the list, with World War Z and Flight coming in third and fourth respectively. Both White House thrillers Olympus Has Fallen and White House Down made the cut as well. See which one came out on top!

These are Redbox’s most overall rented movies of the year, according to their stats:
1. Identity Thief
2. The Heat
3. World War Z
4. Flight
5. Olympus Has Fallen
6. Django Unchained
7. Grown Ups 2
8. White House Down
9. Here Comes the Boom
10. Now You See Me

It’s worth noting before we comment further, per Redbox’s site, the 2013 Redbox Movie Awards are based on a actual rental data from January 1 through December 8. Movies with less than 25 weeks of actual rental data include projected rentals into 2014.

As mentioned, Melissa McCarthy has proven to be a hot ticket for rentals, as two of her comedies topped the list; Identity Thief and The Heat. Of course, one could argue that Ryan Reynolds is a contributing factor here. He’s not in either movie, but he’s the Kevin-Bacon link between The Heat's Sandra Bullock (The Proposal) and Identity Thief's Jason Bateman (The Change-Up). I’m not saying it’d be a good argument, but if you wanted to make a case — preferably using graphs including a map of Alaska and some kind of chart breaking down all of the existing body-switching comedies — I’d be willing to hear you out. In the meantime, let’s hear it for Melissa McCarthy for being a great quirky wildcard character in a buddy comedy. It’s clearly a winning formula.

As for the men, Redbox says Bruce Willis (Red 2, G.I. Joe: Retaliation, A Good Day To Die Hard) tops the list of most-rented actors. Perhaps it's the three movies that managed to push Willis above Jamie Foxx, who starred in Django Unchained and White House Down, both of which are on the Top 10. Kevin James also managed to get two movies on the list, with Grown Ups 2 and Here Comes the Boom. And then there's Morgan Freeman, who's in both Olympus Has Fallen and Now You See Me.

Redbox included some other noteworthy milestones about this year’s rentals, which demonstrate continued interest in Avengers, as well as the fast demand for Olympus Has Fallen:
Olympus Has Fallen was the fastest movie to surpass one million rentals, in just three days; Now You See Me stayed in the daily top 10 longer than any other title, at 63 days; World War Z was the top-renting Blu-ray Disc®; and The Imposter was the top-renting documentary. The most streamed title on Redbox Instant by Verizon was Marvel’s The Avengers.

I'm thinking Marvel's The Avengers had a good year for streaming this year, as the 2012 super-hero film is also available on Netflix and Amazon Prime.
