Is it blue or black? Is it white or gold? The internet can't seem to decide, as the dress below has made the rounds, resulting in a debate over which two colors people are seeing when they look at it...
The photo above has gotten a lot of attention today, as people can't seem to agree on what two colors they're seeing. Is it the lighting? Or are people's brains just processing the colors differently? It seems inevitable that there will be some kind of scientific explanation for why people are seeing two entirely different sets of colors.
Buzzfeed gathered their own information on what might be happening here, consulting with a post-production supervisor named Ben who believes that the people who see it as blue and black are "seeing the photo at face value," while those who see the gold and white are "compensating to the photo's lighting and aesthetic."
Journalist Andrew Peng did a bit of tinkering with the image to show how the dress might look different brighter or darker...
Not sure if that solves anything, but it does show how different the colors can appear when the brightness is adjusted.
(Via MTV) Taylor Swift seems pretty confident that it's blue and black.
Kaling also shared the theory that eye color may have something to do with it...
And Ellen DeGeneres seems to understand the significance of the dress as it relates to history...
While Cinema Blend's own Nick Romano suspects government involvement and a tie-in to a popular young adult franchise...
Please RETWEET and RESPOND with what colours you see on the dress, so we can get to the bottom of this SCIENTIFICALLY pic.twitter.com/l89uK695og

I don't understand this odd dress debate and I feel like it's a trick somehow. I'm confused and scared. PS it's OBVIOUSLY BLUE AND BLACK

Mindy Kaling, meanwhile, asked her former Office co-star/writer BJ Novak if he was insane for saying it's white and gold...
“@bjnovak: white and gold”. ARE YOU INSANE

From this day on, the world will be divided into two people. Blue & black, or white & gold. http://t.co/xJeR7GldwP pic.twitter.com/i6BwVzPzSZ
