In its roughly 3 million years on the air, The Simpsons has experienced soaring highs and awkward lows, and through it all, there have been at least two elements that even the most pessimistic naysayers rarely gripe about: the voice cast and the couch gags. And the upcoming sequence will definitely find a crossover audience, as the iconic animated comedy has parodied the opening titles of another long-running TV hit, The Big Bang Theory. Check it out!
Doesn't it seem like The Simpsons would have put together a Big Bang Theory opening parody years ago? It almost feels like it actually did happen already, considering all the other bits of pop culture that have come up. And I am about 90% certain I'm not solely thinking that because recent years appeared on the timeline at the bottom of the screen. That other 10%, though...
Regardless of could-haves and should-haves, it's still a pretty solid in that Big Bang Theory's inclusion wasn't just random or arbitrary. The Simpsons has offered fans over 600 episodes thus far, and the timeline graphic was a great way to pay tribute to the six episodes that served as centennial installments, as well as the Christmas-set series premiere. Plus, there couldn't be a more appropriate visual element than a rapid stream of split-second stills of Springfield's many characters. (As well as Kang and Kodos.) And the music itself provided a good source of reworked lyrics that tied in events from the Simpson family's bizarre lifetime. Oh, Abe.
With so much of the show's past popping up in this clip, it makes one wonder what would happen if the creative team put together a version where they only discussed future events. Given how well the show does at correctly making random predictions, it would be an interesting experiment. Or not. I'm sure Sheldon has an opinion.
If you've forgotten or are not aware of what The Big Bang Theory's actual opening looks like, you can check it out below.
This couch gag will air ahead of the episode "Looking for Mr. Goodbart," which plays this weekend. In it, Bart finds an unexpected reward in being punished to hang out with elderly citizens, and realizes that taking advantage of them is equally unrewarding. Absolutely Fabulous star Jennifer Saunders will cameo as Phoebe, and we'll also get to see a side plot involving Springfield's obsession with a Pokemon Go spoof. Nothing Big Bang Theory about any of that, sadly.
You can catch this couch gag airing live on Fox on Sunday night at 8:00 p.m. ET. And, of course, The Big Bang Theory airs Thursday nights on CBS at 8:00 p.m. ET. Nick is a Cajun Country native, and is often asked why he doesn't sound like that's the case. His love for his wife and daughters is almost equaled by his love of gasp-for-breath laughter and gasp-for-breath horror. A lifetime spent in the vicinity of a television screen led to his current dream job, as well as his knowledge of too many TV themes and ad jingles.
