When Solomon Grundy Will Show Up On Gotham

Solomon Grundy in the Injustice comics

If there's one superhero property that isn't afraid to take risks, its FOX's Batman focused series Gotham. The prequel has made bold choices and changes to its iconic characters, allowing Gotham to function outside of the proper DC timeline. While Bruce Wayne may finally be getting close to becoming Batman, Season 4 will also bring the debut of an iconic and massively powerful villain: the undead monster Solomon Grundy. Butch was revealed to be turning into Grundy last year, and now we know when the big guy will appear on Gotham. Per one Gotham producer,

He is two episodes away. We're really banking a lot on the Grundy [this season]. He comes in episode five.

That's right, we're just a few short weeks away from Solomon Grundy smashing his way onto the scene in Gotham. So enjoy the feeling of peace while it lasts.

This news comes to us from Gotham co-executive producer Bryan Wynbrandt, who recently sat down to speak with Comic Book about the show's fourth season. It looks like Solomon Grundy's entrance has been meticulously planned, and the new villain will likely be a major factor into the narrative of Season 4. So while the first half of the season is titled "A Dark Knight", Bruce's prototype Batman may have to face a formidable villain in his first go as a vigilante.

Butch was a major character since the very beginning of Gotham, and has been through his fare share of horror and mutilation during the first three seasons. His plot in Season 3 largely focused on the triangle of power and love between he, Tabitha, and Barbara Kean. Barbara and Butch's conflict exploded at the end of Season 3, and she ended up shooting Butch in the head.

Butch in Season 3

But since Gotham is a comic book show, that doesn't mean he actually died. We last saw Butch in a hospital, where his real name was revealed to be Cyrus Gold. Comic fans will know this to be the name of Solomon Grundy, essentially confirming his eventual appearance in Season 4. Since then, Gotham viewers have been waiting patiently for the big guy to show up, and it looks like they'll have to wait another two weeks.

It should be interesting to see how Butch transitions into Solomon Grundy. Plenty of Gotham characters have returned from the dead, so there could be any number of methods for his resurrection. It's also unclear how much of Butch's intellect will remain when Grundy eventually rises. If he's brought back as the simpleton that fans know and love, perhaps he'll be doing the bidding of another villain like Barbara or Penguin. We'll just have to wait and see.

Gotham airs new episodes Thursday on FOX. In the meantime, check out our fall premiere list to plan your next binge watch.
