Freeform has been growing out its list of original scripted programming for a little while now. Shadowhunters, Beyond, Famous in Love, and Grown-ish are just a few of the network's shows. And we've got good news for fans of Grown-ish today. The spinoff of ABC's Black-ish, Grown-ish premiered earlier this month, and while it has only aired four episodes, Freeform has already decided to renew the show for a second season.
According to The Hollywood Reporter, Freeform has announced that Grown-ish has been renewed for a second season. The upcoming sophomore season will include 20 episodes, as opposed to the 13 episodes of the current premiere season. The news comes after Grown-ish has been on the air for about four weeks, premiering on January 3.
The half-hour comedy has proven to be a critical and commercial success for Freeform. The Grown-ish premiere was the best comedy launch the network has had in the past five and a half years. The first episode drew 1.56 million total viewers, including 917,000 among the adults 18-49 demographic. So, yeah, ABC had the incentive to keep the show around.
Grown-ish is a spinoff of the ABC comedy Black-ish. It was originally developed at ABC, but the network decided to pass and Freeform scooped it up. The spinoff follows Zoey (Yara Shahidi), the eldest daughter of the Johnson family as she attends her freshmen year at Cal U, and learns that not everything goes your way after leaving the nest. While dealing with the typical issues of growing up, the show also tackles social issues. The show was created by Kenya Barris, who also serves as showrunner. Deon Cole, Trevor Jackson, Francia Raisa, Emily Arlook, and Chris Parnell fill out the rest of the cast.
The renewal comes at a busy time for Freeform. The network is readying a Pretty Little Liars spinoff while planning for the end of its long-running series, The Fosters. Still to be decided is the fate of the half-hour comedy Young and Hungry. In addition to Grown-ish and the equally fresh Alone Together, Freeform will soon be rolling out new shows like Marvel's Cloak and Dagger and Siren, an upcoming drama about, uh, killer mermaids.
Grown-ish currently airs new episodes on Wednesdays at 8 p.m. EST on Freeform. It's next episode "C.R.E.A.M. (Cash Rules Everything Around Me)" is set to air on January 24. There's still lots of TV shows out there to catch up on, so be sure to stick with CinemaBlend and we'll keep you updated on new shows as soon as that information becomes available.
