There’s no denying that The Walking Dead has laid out some major cliffhangers in its first five seasons, but the odd non-linear timeline that has comprised this first chunk of Season 6 has made almost every episode’s ending feel like the biggest thing ever. And it’s all taken place over just one day! (Well, except for Morgan’s flashback.) Sunday night’s episode ended with someone responding “Help” through Daryl’s walkie-talkie, and the Internet exploded with thoughts about who it might have been.
Here are 6 characters that we think could have been on the other end of that radio call. And while I’d have loved to have tossed in “Daryl from the future,” these are all as realistic as the show allows.
Rick
The last time we saw Rick, he was back in Alexandria and trying to make sure everything and everyone was safe (as well as romancing Jessie). But the last time we saw him before that, he was trapped inside of a non-moving RV as a zombie horde approached. We never got to see how he made it out of there in one piece, and it’s entirely possible that it was him asking for assistance. Considering Rick’s return to the safe haven was without Daryl, Abraham and Sasha, it doesn’t necessarily mean that they got to Rick and helped him, but it still might have been him on the radio.
Wade
We were never able to see Wade’s face, as evidenced by the image above, though we did get to hear his voice. And one of the things we heard him talk about was switching his group’s radio frequency to an alpha channel, so we know that these guys are communicating by walkie talkies. (No huge surprise, but still.) We’re pretty sure that these guys are Negan’s Saviors, a group that is intent on extorting goods and things from every other survivor they can find, so maybe this was a blind request for aid to see who will show up.
Enid
Enid exited the Alexandria community right as the whole Wolves massacre was happening, which has caused many to believe that she’s one of them. If that’s the case, she knows quite a bit about how things are going in Alexandria, and it’s possible that she or one of the other Wolves is trying to draw a small group of Alexandrians outside the walls to take them out. The voice sounded male, but it also sounded a little distorted, so it’s hard to tell. Also, the Wolves don’t seem to be a “plan ahead” kind of a group, but desperation changes the game.
Dwight
Even though we didn’t spend a whole lot of time with Dwight and Honey, we know that they’re a couple that thrives on hopelessness and will do just about anything it takes to make sure they survive. They were a major thorn in Daryl’s paw, having initially held him hostage before responding to his good will by stealing his crossbow and his motorcycle, so iIt doesn’t seem likely that Dwight would be trying to specifically draw Daryl back to them, as Daryl’s threat was pretty straightforward. But he could just be looking for genuine help from someone out there that isn’t the Saviors.
Someone at Alexandria
Definitely the most boring of the choices here, it’s possible that someone back in Alexandria, like Aaron or Carl or Spencer, is on the other end of that radio message. Things were definitely bad in Alexandria, but we’re not quite sure at which point during the day the “help” message came in regards to the horde reaching the safe haven. If this is, in fact, the case, then we hope that something majorly fucked up happened right before the message was sent. Like maybe Ron getting bitten dead in his stupid face, or Morgan going nuts again and beating Father Gabriel with his stick.
Glenn
I know, I know. You’re saying, “What the hell, man? Norman Reedus himself said that it wasn’t Glenn on the other end of the radio call.” And to that I say, “Since when is every Walking Dead interview filled with truth and nothing but the truth?” The person least likely to share secrets about something is the person directly involved with those secrets, so I wouldn’t be the least bit surprised if it turns out to be Glenn on the other end, with Reedus fibbing for the sake of keeping the mystery going. Either way it goes, we’re going to end up hearing from Glenn again in the next two episodes, so if this wasn’t him, then he’ll show up in some other capacity.
Will we find out who it was on next week’s episode of The Walking Dead, or will we be dealt another cliffhanger mystery to keep us talking until the midseason finale? There’s only one way to find out. Let us know on the next page who you think it was.
