AMC is developing a sci-fi horror series, 99 Stories, penned by veteran feature writer David Seltzer, according to a Hollywood Reporter story.

Set in a 99-story high-rise building, the show revolves around a group of strangers who find themselves trapped with no way out but up. Seltzer, whose credits include The Omen and Dragonfly, created the series with James Middleton, executive producer of The Sarah Connor Chronicles and Steven Banks, who penned Are We There Yet? and the upcoming Beautiful Asian Brides.

In an homage to 2001: A Space Odyssey, the strangers are at the mercy of a technological brain that controls every element of the building. “The elevators are in control of their destiny, whittling them out by deciding who they deem deserve to go up," Seltzer said, adding that all of this has repercussions in the outside world.

In the past year, AMC successfully entered the world of original programming with the Emmy-winning Broken Trail and drama Mad Men. Next up is Breaking Bad, a drama series about a high school chemistry teacher who becomes a criminal during a serious mid-life crisis.

AMC has been looking for a horror series to complement its long-running Monsterfest, which features 240 hours of nonstop horror films. Now in its 11th year, the fest is currently underway and has expanded online to include full-length films available at AMCtv.com.
