Sitcoms are a special breed of television program. One of the commonly beloved aspects of a sitcom is the on again, off again relationships that often occur with the main characters. We had Ross and Rachel in Friends, Sam and Diane in Cheers, and currently we have Nick and Jess in FOX’s comedy New Girl.
After teasing us with the prospect of Nick and Jess being together for a few seasons, we finally got a relationship between the two, before it went downward, much to the chagrin of the audience. One of New Girl’s writers and EP Brett Baer recently opened up when asked if Nick and Jess were done forever.
No, it’s never totally shut with those two, which is the fun of it. We’ve actually had a nice time trying to write away from that and let it be it’s own thing and let the pot simmer a little bit, but it’s exciting to think that we’ve got like an extra color in that box now, because bringing [Fox] in does create all sorts of new dynamics that we haven’t played at this point.
This statement, which comes to us from EW, seems to point to a conflict which will be happening in the rest of New Girl’s fifth season. Additionally, New Girl’s creator Liz Meriwether confirmed that the door is definitely not shut between the two leads.
New Girl is in a bit of a transitional period at the moment. Season 5 had its premiere this year in January, rather than the traditional September date. Additionally, Coach has left the series (again) and it seems that Cece and Schmidt are finally in a good, engaged place. Without the Cece/Schmidt love story as well as Coach’s antics, New Girl has lost a bunch of the best plotlines recently.
And once New Girl finally came back, we quickly saw Zooey Deschanel leave the show to go on maternity leave. New Girl without the new girl is understandably a little weird, but there is some hope.
Since Nick and Jess might have their relationship explored once Zooey Deschanel returns to the show, it has the possibility of bringing New Girl back to its former glory.
The sitcom currently has Reagan (Megan Fox) taking Jess’s place as the new girl renting out Jess’s room while she serves Jury Duty. Since Nick and Reagan have a spark of romance growing, it could make for some good television to have a good old fashioned love triangle appear in future episodes of New Girl. Will Nick choose to continue a relationship with Reagan or take a chance on a new start with Jess? That’s a show I would be willing to watch.
Only time will tell how Reagan and Nick’s relationship continues to grow, as well as when the hell we’ll be able to see Jess come back, hair ribbons and all. We’ll be sure to update you as more information becomes public.
New Girl airs Tuesdays on FOX.
