Few futures are ever completely certain in TV when it comes to renewals and cancellations, so it’s hard not to worry about the fate of certain shows. Luckily, Fox has some very good news for fans of New Girl. The Tuesday night comedy has officially received a renewal order for a sixth season filled with the zany shenanigans of Jess and Co.
New Girl aired its 100th episode back in March, and the creative well has shown no signs of drying up. There aren’t many ensemble comedies that are able to keep things fresh for season after season, but New Girl has managed to avoid falling into a formula by mixing up character dynamics and keeping action moving forward rather than stagnating into a procedural. The cast is filled with hilarious actors with great chemistry, and news of a sixth season is definitely reason to celebrate.
Season 5 has been somewhat unusual, so it’s reassuring to know that the changes from previous seasons haven’t cost the show its chance to move forward. Star Zooey Deschanel’s pregnancy meant that New Girl would have to write Jess as pregnant, go to absurd lengths to hide the baby bump, or accommodate filming to keep the pregnancy off screen. New Girl went the accommodation route, and the wonky scheduling meant that Season 5 didn’t premiere until January of 2016. In the months since, the show has brought laughs as uproarious as ever and even brought in Megan Fox to show off her comedic chops in the role of new roommate Reagan.
The New Girl renewal marks the second Tuesday night Fox comedy to get the order for another season, as Brooklyn Nine-Nine was recently renewed for a fourth season. The other Tuesday night comedies aren’t doing quite as well as New Girl and Brooklyn Nine-Nine, but Grinder and Grandfathered fans can still at least hope that Fox might give them another season to try and win over some of the viewers of the two returning veteran shows.
Confirmation of a Season 6 of New Girl is especially encouraging considering the momentum of all the action of Season 5. The wedding of CeCe and Schmidt that seemed inconceivable back in the beginning of Season 1 is fast-approaching, and there’s an exciting roster of guest stars waiting in the wings to appear before the finale. To name just a few, Megan Fox will be back as Reagan, Damon Wayans Jr. will reprise his role yet again as Coach, and Rob Riggle will make another appearance as Schmidt’s cousin.
To see what antics Jess and the rest of the crew get up to as the wedding approaches, tune in to New Girl on Tuesdays at 8 p.m. ET on Fox. Don’t forget to check out our summer TV premiere schedule to see which shows will be back on the small screen in the not-too-distant future.
