HBO Renews Girls And Veep For Second Seasons

Let's hear it for the girls (and veeps)! While only a handful of episodes have aired between them, HBO is apparently confident enough in the potential of both Veep and Girls that the premium cable network has decided to move forward on both series, renewing them for second seasons.

Deadline posted the news today, stating that HBO has given 10-episode orders for second seasons for both Veep and Girls. As Deadline points out, while Veep earned higher ratings in its debut, likely aided by the Game of Thrones lead-in, both series are doing about the same when factoring in the total viewers they take in. Girls' gross audience is 3.8 million, while Veep's is 3.7 million.

Veep stars Julia-Louis Dreyfus as the vice-president of the U.S., and follows her attempts to manage her job, with the help of her trusted staff. Meanwhile, Girls follows far less professionally established females. The comedy is created by and stars Lena Dunham as a twenty-something trying to figure her life out while living in the city, and often looks to her friends to help her with her issues.

Before both comedies premiered, I anticipated liking Veep easily and having to put in a bit more effort to get into Girls. Strangely, the reverse has been the case. Granted, Girls has had one more episode to win me over than Veep has, having premiered a week earlier. Maybe it's more that the styles of humor don't really fit together in a back-to-back episode, despite the focus on female leads. Regardless, I'm sticking with both of them, and it's nice to see that HBO's standing by both series as I have a feeling they're both only going to get better with time.
