If you’ve spent the summer itching for glimpses at a show that combines bibliophilia with the supernatural with Indiana Jones, then you’ve probably been waiting for new footage of TNT’s The Librarians. If, on the other hand, you’ve never heard of a show that combines bibliophilia with the supernatural with Indiana Jones – which is something of a niche genre – then the promo for the second season of The Librarians is definitely still worth the watch.
The Librarians premiered in December of 2014 as a spinoff of the Librarian made-for-TV film series. The three films – released in 2004, 2006, and 2008 – starred Noah Wyle of ER fame as plain old librarian Flynn Carson who turned into a big-letter Librarian when he was hired to curate a facility filled with mystical artifacts. In the years since, the family-friendly franchise has gained a loyal following thanks to a fantastical premise and great cast (including Christian Kane of Leverage fame and a decidedly not blue Rebecca Romijn, known for her X-Men role of Mystique), both of which were highlighted in the first trailer for the second season.
In fact, the trailer showcased everything that is wonderful about the series in less than two minutes. Each of the major characters got a moment for a laugh, and the show managed to poke fun at itself to a delightful degree. There’s something wonderful about a ridiculous show embracing its quirks, and the trailer proves that what made the first season great has not been lost over hiatus.
Just watch the scene of young Ezekiel citing Frankenstein’s monster’s notorious hatred of fire while brandishing a pocket lighter, and try not to laugh at Flynn giving the same reaction as any exasperated English teacher:
In the movie. Not the book.
That single line perfectly sums up everything that is so much fun about The Librarians. The show is a combination of movie spectacle and literary wonderment, and the second season looks to be just as much of a thrill ride as the first for returning viewers.
The trailer also managed to deliver enough exposition to suck in new viewers without weighing it down for returning viewers. Sure, summing up the entire premise of the show wouldn’t have been at the top of the list of what most fans were hoping for, but the flashes of the new bits of fun and excitement behind the exposition were more than enough to compensate.
Overall, the trailer for Season 2 of The Librarians was a concentrated dose of action, adventure, and meta humor. There are even a handful of great book jokes. It takes a real spine to table contents long enough to make a book joke, if you really ink about it.
Season 2 of The Librarians premieres on November 1 at 8 p.m. EST on TNT.
