It’s pilot season and while there are a number in development, some have more series potential than others. I suppose that’s all relative and subject to personal preference, but in terms of the originality of its plot, Shawn Ryan’s Last Resort is among my favorites. It doesn’t hurt that Ryan has a history of strong series with interesting, well developed characters, with (the unfortunately short-lived) Terriers and The Chicago Code among his recent credits.

Last Resort takes place in the near future and follows the crew of a U.S. submarine that refuses to fire its nukes when ordered and ends up taking shelter on an island, where they take over a NATO listening station and declare themselves an independent nation. It sounds different and adventurous and full of potential. The cast includes Scott Speedman (Felicity), Andre Braugher (Homicide: Life on the Street), Robert Patrick (Terminator 2: Judgment Day), Max Adler (Glee), Autumn Reeser (No Ordinary Family), and Dichen Lachman (Dollhouse).

My anticipation for the project has only been heightened by Shawn Ryan’s tweets recently, sharing updates on the filming of the project, and even a few set photos, which give us a look at the cast and the submarine backdrop...

Sure, the photos don’t give much away beyond what we already know, but it certainly has me eager to see more (perhaps something off the sub!). We’ll have to wait and see if it goes to series. In the meantime, if you're a fan of Shawn Ryan, here's his Twitter.
