Before the events of J.J. Abrams’ Star Wars: Episode VII, and even before the events of Star Wars: Episode IV – A New Hope, there was Ezra Bridger and the rest of the Star Wars Rebels. The upcoming Disney XD series has been building fan anticipation in the last few weeks with one colorful preview after another, and Disney has finally announced when we can feast our eyes on this mid-quel series. May your DVR’s Force be with it.

The Disney Channel proper will premiere the one-hour Sparks of Rebellion movie on Friday, October 3 at 9 p.m. ET. But if you just can’t possibly hold your banthas that long, verified Disney XD users will be able to log into the WatchDisneyXD website on Monday, September 29. (DirecTV users like me are kind of screwed there.) The special will then make its Disney XD premiere on Monday, October 6.

A week later, Star Wars Rebels will begin airing its half-hour episodes on Disney XD starting Monday, October 13. The series takes place during the 20-year span between the two trilogies, as the Galactic Empire is expanding its evil power across the galaxy, and the Rebel Alliance is just starting to come together.

In Star Wars Rebels, renegade Jedi Kana Jarrus (Freddie Prinze, Jr. ) is keeping his Force powers quiet to avoid the detection of a growing Empire population on planets all over. He teams up with the young thief Ezra (Taylor Gray), who soon realizes that he is closer to the Jedi than he ever could have imagined. They’re joined by the hulking enforcer Zeb Orrelios (Steven Blum), the weapons expert Sabine Wren (Tya Sircar) and Hera Syndulla (Vanessa Marshall), the group’s matriarch figure who pilots the starship Ghost, which serves as this motley crew’s home away from homes. Hera has a first-gen droid named C1-10P, which resembles R2D2’s original designs from artist Ralph McQuarrie. (R2D2 and C-3PO (Anthony Daniels) are also here, not to worry.)

It’d be one thing if these guys were just roaming around holding protests, but Darth Vader has put a hit out on all Jedi, and he’s sent out his super baddie Inquisitor (Jason Isaacs) to use his double-bladed lightsaber to wreak havoc. Inquisitor is assisted by Agent Kallus (David Oyelowo), and we can also expect to find Lando Calrissian (Billy Dee Williams) and Obi-Wan Kenobi (James Arnold Taylor) around and about.

Check out one of the battle scenes below, and go here to watch the first seven minutes of the opening episode.

Those who can’t wait to own the Spark of Rebellion special for themselves will be happy to know Disney plans on releasing it on VOD starting Saturday, October 4, with a Blu-ray/DVD version coming out on Tuesday, October 14. It will contain a Ghost 3D model ship, four Star Wars Rebels shorts, and a never-before-seen featurette that goes deeper into the adventures that lay ahead in the season.
