TV Recap: My Boys - Take My Work Wife...Please

What happens when you’re the friend who everyone turns to for help? Apparently, you know you aren’t the star of the show anymore. In last night’s episode of My Boys, the only inkling of story line directly involving PJ (her being into Bobby) went out the window as she became a secondary character to the boys. You know what, though? I’m not complaining. The episode was a tad scattered but each character is beginning to feel more complete and that definitely makes for a better overall show.

Kenny’s big problem had me cracking up. First, there’s the fact that he’s now dating two young, beautiful women. Though I’ve never seen a guy with two girlfriends spend so much time at his neighborhood bar. Second, there’s his constant and irrational fear that they will meet, become roommates and then discover they’re both dating him over hot chocolate. Finally, there’s the way Mike reacts, which is to believe that the world has somehow turned into his comic book where day is night and werewolves roam the streets. Mike is so desperate, he begs PJ to set him up with anyone that looks even remotely like a woman.

Enter the work wife. Seeing Andy’s relationship with his new best friend at work, Joe, spurred the gang to think they were too close. After all, how many friends who are just friends give each other full on massages and go out to lunch everyday. So to prove to Andy that his completely platonic friend is into him, they decide she should be the one that is set up with Mike. After a disastrous date, in which Andy and Joe share a plate of food and laugh over inside jokes, it is pointed out to Andy that she is completely into him. Of course, Andy’s a happily married man and would never cross that line…right? I hope so, I don’t think I could take any of the boys turning into that big a prick.

The other soon-to-be happily married man, Bobby, turns to PJ to help him save his wedding. After his mother fired three wedding planners and his fiancé was stuck dealing with immigration stuff, he was left to plan the event and, of course, turned to PJ for guidance. She jumped in head first, partly to help him and partly to prove to the world that she doesn’t have any lingering feelings for him. And you know what, she convinced me. Last weeks episode left me with the tiniest hope that she would speak up because Brendan found out how she felt about Bobby but this week, the entire idea was cut down to one line between Stephanie and PJ when they met to discuss Stephanie’s surprisingly good book.

It turns out this great book is actually based on each of the guys and their faults. When the guys finally read the book and discover this, they want to show how wrong Stephanie is. Brendan decides to stop temping at Andy’s law firm and start planning for the future. Kenny says he’ll keep dating both women. And we all find out that Bobby is a great guy, no buts. My Boys is my summer Thursday night staple but this season has felt a little off. Hopefully, being dissected in a book that “People gave three and a half stars” will make the guys do something proactive with their lives. I can’t take much more of Brendan being depressed or Mike whining about Kenny’s recent Casanova status. Actually, scratch that last part, I love watching Mike suffer. High-larious. I also need my girl PJ to step up and start doing something with her life. So her book last week fell through, she could write another one. Or she could come clean with how she feels about Bobby. Something, anything. I’m seriously begging here.
