E3 2013: Mad Max Announced, Has Exclusive PS4 Content

Avalanche Studios, the makers of the Just Cause series was already rumored to be working on the on a Mad Max game, but Sony took E3 as an opportunity to not only rub in their anti-DRM policies in the face of Microsoft, they managed to unveil some highly unexpected games, including Mad Max.

We didn't get to see the face of the titular character, but it was obvious what the game was once his one-shoulder-pad on a tattered leather jacket came into view and his trademark sawed-off shotgun panned in front of the camera. This means that it remains to be seen if Max will be Mad Mel or Bane Hardy? I think the nostalgia in me would really want to see Gibson as the iconic Road Warrior, but there's also a part of me that fears that it will more than likely be Tom Hardy from George Miller's upcoming Mad Max: Fury Road.

No matter who you play, the most exciting part about the upcoming Mad Max title is that it will be running on Avalanche Studios' next-generation Just Cause engine, also known as the Avalanche Engine. I don't think they could have found a more suitable company to work on this game given that Avalanche specializes in large open worlds with lots of vehicular-based combat. Just short of DICE, this is probably a match made in heaven...then again, is there any game that DICE couldn't make and turn into a masterpiece? (I'm also thoroughly convinced that if EA didn't have them under their wing they would be in serious trouble.)

Mad Max is set for release on the Xbox One and PlayStation 4. The game will contain special bonus content on the PS4 version and should be out in time to launch with the movie. More info? Feel free to check out Avalanche Studios' official website.
