PSN Celebrates Golden Week By Discounting Japanese-Developed Games
It’s Golden Week in Japan, but that doesn’t mean that gamers in the US have to feel like they’re being left out on the celebration. In honor of this annual holiday, the PlayStation Network will be offering up a killer sale featuring games created by Japanese developers.
For those unfamiliar with Golden Week, it’s a sort of amalgam of multiple holidays rolled into one, including Showa Day, Constitution Memorial Day, Children’s Day and more. It’s frequently a period of time when many Japanese take time off of work and travel or, you know, play lots and lots of video games.
For those of you in the US who plan on observing Golden Day and need to fill all of those empty hours with questing, battling, dungeon-diving and the like, then you’ll want to pay extra close attention to this week’s big sale, which discounts Japanese-developed games for everyone and even knocks off an additional chunk of change for PlayStation Plus subscribers.
“I’m excited to announce we’re celebrating acclaimed Japanese games on PS3 and PS Vita as part of the Golden Week Sale starting tomorrow and running through May 5,” said Sony Network Entertainment Digital Distribution Manager, Chiey Chen. “In Japan, Golden Week encompasses four national holidays, and doubles as the biggest travel and shopping season of the year. This week, we pay homage to this tradition with a golden (wink) opportunity to pick up some awesome games at up to 50 percent off. PlayStation Plus members get an added bonus, receiving up to 75 percent off.”
At this point, it sounds like the US will use any semi-appropriate reason to validate the existence of a new sale and, no, I’m absolutely not complaining about that fact. This list contains a lot of stellar games at some pretty low prices, meaning you’ll have an opportunity to stock up on loads of PS3 and Vita games just in time to carry you into the summer season.
The list is far too long to include the whole thing here, but you can check it out for yourself within the official announcement. If you’re looking for a few standouts, however, I’d be more than happy to cherry pick some favorites for you.
If you enjoy classic RPGs, then you’ll definitely want to give Chrono Cross and Chrono Trigger a gander, both marked down to $4.99 for the duration of the sale, or just $3.49 for Plus folks. Get them on the cheap and find out why some count the Chrono series as one of the absolute best in the entire genre.
The recently released battle game, Dragon Ball Z: Battle of Z is also being marked down to $29.99 on PS3 and $19.99 on Vita regular, or as low as $15.00 and $10.00 on those respective systems with plus.
And then there’s Hot Shots Golf: World Invitational, Metal Gear Solid HD Collection, Muramasa Rebirth, Ys: Memories of Celceta and the reigning Vita RPG champ, Persona 4 Golden. I only listed a fraction of the games being discounted here, so be sure to check out the Golden Week Sale on PSN and gorge on the Japanese goodness.
