Update: The attacks on PSN and Xbox Live have apparently stopped.

Original story: PlayStation and Xbox gamers alike are having a rough Christmas. Both Xbox Live and PSN have been disrupted by DDoS attacks.

Xbox One and Xbox 360 owners are currently having problems signing in. Microsoft's Xbox Live Service Status page acknowledges the problem and promises quick action.

"We’re working to get everything back to normal ASAP," Microsoft says. "We appreciate your patience. Check back in 30 minutes for a status update."

PSN, like Xbox Live, has been experiencing outages since Christmas Eve. Sony indicated on Twitter that they were making headway last night but the problems still remain:
The PSN status page now lists the network as simply "offline".

Hacking group Lizard Squad claimed responsibility for the attacks over Twitter. They also demanded retweets or else they won't let the services come back online.
Lizard Squad is the same group that brought Xbox Live offline at the beginning of December. At the time, they claimed that the outage was just a test run for a larger attack on Christmas.

They didn't promise a Christmas attack on PlayStation Network. However, they've shown in the past that they can wreak havoc on Sony's infrastructure. Lizard Squad took down PSN at the end of the summer.

While Lizard Squad's targets today seem to be limited to Xbox Live and PSN, they've tormented several other companies as well. This fall, they hit Call of Duty: Ghosts and Destiny servers with DDoS attacks. They also brought PC games like World of Warcraft and League of Legends offline during the summer PSN outage.

The group drew the attention of the FBI after calling in a bomb threat on Sony Online President John Smedley's airplane this summer. It seems that the group - or at least some of them - are still at large however.

You'd think that a group that's pissed off several giant corporations and the federal government wouldn't last long but here we are. Let's hope that 2015 results in more arrests and fewer outages.
