Barbarella Lives!

A couple months ago, we reported news of, perhaps, the oddest remake to date -- Barbarella. What could motivate such an endevour? We have no clue. It seems that producers Dino and Martha Del Laurentiis know something we don’t, as they have just completed the rights deal that would allow them to remake their own Barbarella, says Variety.

"Barbarella is the ultimate science-fiction adventure heroine: smart, strong funny and sexy," De Laurentiis said. "I'm excited to reintroduce Barbarella to a new generation of moviegoers."

Sparing no expense, for whatever reason, Laurentiis enlisted the penmanship of Neal Purvis and Robert Wade (Casino Royale [2006]) to write the script. While the original filmed Jane Fonda as a sexpot boiling over, in space, the remake will modernize Barbarella into a "modern gal who survives in a futuristic world through her intelligence, fighting skills and sexuality.”

There is no time table for a release, but the writers have just turned in the latest Bond script and will get to work on Barbarella’s face lift.
