Vin Diesel would like to remind you that the blockbuster season hasn’t ended… even though he already has a $786-million worldwide earner in Fast & Furious 6, and he has moved on to Marvel’s Guardians of the Galaxy to voice the tree-like hero, Groot. Diesel has one more trick up his sleeve this season in Riddick, however, and the latest clip (posted to Yahoo Movies) shows his anti-hero title character dealing with an aggressive, reptilian adversary. I’ve seen the shot of Diesel sliding beneath the belly of this beast in previous trailers, but how come no one mentioned to me that he’s rescuing a dog in the process?!

Riddick is Diesel’s third stab at this sci-fi character, which has been spurred by an ongoing collaboration with director David Twohy that dates back to 2000’s Pitch Black. The new film is a rare sequel in the fact that it’s arriving nine long years after its immediate predecessor, 2004’s The Chronicles of Riddick. And yet, Diesel has proven – through the Fast series, primarily – that he has a dedicated fanbase who should follow him into the theater. He also has gone on record multiple times saying that he values the potential of this character, and that he thinks they missed the mark with Chronicles. He’s trying to set this series back on the right track.

The cast conducted an informative and passionate panel in Hall H at San Diego Comic-Con back in July and you can watch it in its entirety below:

And as you can see, ass-kicking co-star Katee Sackhoff gets as loud of a response as Diesel. As she should. In the new film, Riddick is stranded on a desolated planet when a team of bounty hunters locks in on his location and aims to claim the bounty that’s on his head. With a solar storm bearing down on the warring parties, Riddick knows that the mercenaries are the least of his worries – and that the creature in the above clip trying to bite his head off proves his point.

More Riddick clips might roll in between now and September 6th, when the movie opens. Until then, here’s a reel of Riddick’s 10 best lines pulled from Pitch Black and Chronicles. How many memorable lines will Diesel add to the character’s legacy in the latest adventure?
