Star Trek Side By Side Photo Comparisons

By Josh Tyler: 2008-10-16 02:28:38
By now you’ve probably already been blown away by the amazing, first images released by Paramount from their new Star Trek movie several hours ago here. I’ve found myself revisiting them again and again, comparing this new version of Trek with the old one in my head.

Rather than just using my imagination to stack J.J. Abrams’s version up against classic Trek though, I’ve put together a few side by side comparisons, facing off characters and items revealed in the new pictures with their classic Trek interpretations. How does Chris Pine’s Captain Kirk stack up against Shatner's? How different are the uniforms? Those are the questions plaguing this Trek fan, and here are the answers:

JAMES T. KIRK

MR. SPOCK

LEONARD MCCOY

MONTGOMERY SCOTT

HIKARU SULU

UHURA

PAVEL CHEKOV

ENTERPRISE BRIDGE

UNIFORMS / STARFLEET LOGO

  • I hope they redo it all just like batman. Maybe it will be more popular this time around. It really wouldn't hurt things. Then maybe star trek would be cool and nerds might finally go on a date or maybe even loose their virginity finally.
  • Chuck Norris should have been considered for Kirk. The man doesn't age. And drop kicks? He's got 'em.
  • OMG!! Mr Spock is Syler before he learnt to strangle people with telekenisis. Also Harold... I mean Sulu is gonna get done for possesion of illegal substances on the Enterprise.
  • I am Sarah Palin. I have no curiousity. I don't read. I have almost no knowledge. I don't know history. I just believe that God talks to me and wants me to screw up America, a country which I actually hate since I've joined a group that wants Alaska to secede from the Union.

My qualifications are: boobs, I have five kids and a really mean temper.

I also talk like the lowest class person ever to run for any office.

    Oh, Lord Save Us All.
  • I agree that the bridge looks a bit bright, I can get over that. The casting looks good. I wasn't going to comment until my 9 year old son pointed out something about the outfits. "Why do they all have the super hero outfits?" When I asked him what he meant, he pointed out the "rings sewn into the shirts like Spider Man and a lot of the other new super hero movies like Superhero Movie." What is that? The new Spandex?
  • Hee! I didn't know this had Sylar in it! He looks so different without his caveman eyebrows. But still sexy enough that even this non-trek fan will have to watch!
  • It seems that one thing people are generally forgetting is that these are still images. Perhaps these actors aren't perfect duplicates of the old cast, but maybe... just maybe... they're good actors that capture the essence of the characters we know and love.

I'll agree that the ship itself doesn't feel right, but the actors they've chosen look close enough to the originals that I'm willing to suspend my criticism until I see some action footage first.

So long as they get KIRK FIGHTING right, I'll be happy.
  • Chekov was present right from the beginning. When you sort the episodes in order of stardate, you'll find episodes with Chekov at the very beginning.

I agree though..... They have overdone it with the ship's design.
  • Just wondering whether Anonlulz was making a Familym Guy reference, from the episode where Peter knocks out cable for Quahog. Also, has anyone else noted how Spock is choking Kirk a good few inches from his neck? I know Spock is a genius, but even Sylar didn't 'create' his telekinesis...
  • "@ Maldoror - John Cho is Korean, so apparantly the difference isn't that big, and Abrams actually talked to Takei about using him. Takei told him that he feels the character Sulu represents all asians, and so it isn't necessary that he be played by a Japanese."

Except... HIKARU is a Japanese name.
Why isn't anyone saying anything official about the changing of this character's race?
It's like they said eh, close enough.
  • I dunno what all the fuss is about, the characters are fairly close facially to their counterparts. They're not THAT young, and frankly I think they did a decent job. There's enough of a resemblance that it's believeable. No, it's not perfect, but it's not bad, I'd like to see someone get a better cast with the people avaliable.

Gotta remember there's a budget to movies as well, I'm sure they're doing their best and that's really all we can ask from them no? Yes it would be nice if we could stick all the original actors into some kind of anti aging machine and have them play the roles... but that's obviously just not gonna work.

As far as Spock not aging as quickly, well, hey, once again, we'd all love to see a spock that looks a lot like Nimoy, but since that's not likely and it'd be easier to make him look a little younger and use a different actor, that's fine by me. I won't nit pick. Little things like this are fine to point out and chuckle over, but nothing that would ever deminish a movie for me. It needs to one hell of a miss-calculation for me to get up in arms about it.
  • Does anyone really give a shit?
  • Oh my God! The nerdiness of these comments!

Ok, the ship looks cool. If they made it like the old one, no new people would want to watch it. Star Trek is about showing what humanity can achieve, and if all we can achieve in our first starship is a bunch of crappy Christmas light consoles, then no one will want to work for it. The bridge looks like what we could build today, if we wanted to. I like it.

Also, the characters much better reflect the progress of society. Today, people are aging more slowly, and the younger generations are much smarter than their predecessors. It makes sense that these people would look younger.
  • I am a die-hard original series fan. I grew up on the show, it's reruns and spinoffs. The only one of the new cast that even remotely captures the character is the new Bones. The rest look like a bunch of metrosexual pansy asses.
  • Jason made a good point...One that I noticed right off. Spock shouldn't look as young as the other characters, and should probably look much the same as Nimoy did in the original (much too old looking now), because Vulcans; even half Vulcans, should age much more slowly than humans.
  • IMO, the old crew was clearly the embodiment of greatness. The actors really played the parts to perfection and you could easily believe that Shatner was Capt.Kirk. Honestly, this new crew looks exactly like the crew of any crappy so called sci-fi series on T.V these days. There is nothing particular or singular about them....I'm just hoping and praying that the story line will not be a total disaster.
  • It seems to me that they didnt even try to find classy good looking actors for this. When you look at the original cast they are stunning, they look classy. This new cast just looks so...so...grungy. They dont look well put together at all. For me it will take some of the magic out of it.
  • @ Maldoror - John Cho is Korean, so apparantly the difference isn't that big, and Abrams actually talked to Takei about using him. Takei told him that he feels the character Sulu represents all asians, and so it isn't necessary that he be played by a Japanese.
  • @Zack - If memory serves, and it might not, they had warp ratings from 1-10, but the scale was changed for TNG.

@Maldoror - One of the funniest things Ive read today.
  • It's amazing how Sulu grew up from a Chinese to a Japanese!

Why don't people make a little effort and find an actual Japanese to play a Japanese? There is a big, big difference.
  • I don't if anyone noticed, but the screen behind them says "warp factor 4.(something)" could they go over warp 4 before the NG series?

    (Just asking, I'm not sure)
  • The new ones just look like a bunch of college kids and Sylar. I think they all lack the elegance of their predecessors. In fact, it kind of looks like they're trying to do a horror movie, that's how obnoxiously young they are.
  • That Zachary Quinto guy can never be anything ells then Sylar to me, he looks way to mean to be Spock. How many times doesn´t he look just like that in Heroes!? Exept for that so am I really looking forward to this movie...
