Tyler Perry Plans Sequel![]()
Tyler Perry continues to be an artist who astounds me. His movies tend to focus on the same themes time after time, and he keeps bringing back his cross-dressed creation Madea for new stories, but they never feel regurgitated or rehashed. He is a filmmaker who can carry the same ideas into new stories and make them feel fresh and optimistic. But even Perry isn’t impervious to the suggestion of the sequel.
Black Voices.com talked with Perry while he was promoting his upcoming film Madea Goes to Jail. Even though the film carries the character of Madea into a new story, it isn’t a sequel, but Perry has a sequel on his mind: one for his 2007 film Why Did I Get Married?. Perry is currently writing the sequel, which would be titled Why Did I Get Married Too? and would reunite the original cast, which included Janet Jackson, Jill Scott, Michael Jai White, and Perry himself in a non-Madea role. In fact, Perry told the site he wouldn’t do the sequel without the original cast - all of them. From what most people say about working with Perry though, I doubt that will be a hard thing to accomplish. His actors and his viewers tend to be very fond of the experience Perry provides. As far as a story, Perry wouldn’t give any details, saying it was too early to reveal what the movie would be about; just that he had more to say on marriage than he said in the first film. My only issue with this is that I thought of Why Did I Get Married? as Perry’s weakest movie. It felt like it relied too much on stereotypical characters and stretched Perry’s ability as a storyteller a little too thin. A sequel might not be a bad idea if he reduced the character count or is able to focus on his central theme a little more. Regardless, even as his weakest movie, I would be interested to hear what more Perry has to say on the subject and like the idea of a sequel. Maybe he can even improve on the technical side of things that caused a lot of my issues with the first movie. |
